Pop Up
The game of reconstructed architecture
Approaching the project with 2 main goals: First is to help investors make effective use of one of the vacant lots and reuse their old drums, wooden pallets and wheels, so the project must be assembleable and easy to relocate to a new site in a short time. Therefore, containers are our choice because of the modular feature that can be transformed into independent individuals with specialized functions (a kitchen, one for sanitation, one for multi-purpose and two warehouse containers). After the end of their life cycle at this land, the containers will be disassembled to another site, and a new game begins.
Through Pop Up, we hope to create an "off-line" creative meeting space for young people after the days of isolation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The site is located opposite Metro Rach Gia supermarket on 3/2 street, which is the busiest area in the city.
230 km of transportation
2 container - size 20 feet + 3 container - size 40 feet
200 scaffolds
60 barrels
60 tires
100 wooden pallets
28 working days
FLEXIBILITY AND RECYCLING
During the design process, we thought of two phrases: flexibility and recycling. Everything is moveable, versatile, can be this and can be that, it's like the way you play Lego : scaffolding, in addition to attracting views, is also a means of access for repair. Technical repair, pallets in addition to the fence function, can be a table, a chair, a place to take photos for young people, or can be turned into an outdoor stage for electric guitarists.
Things that seem redundant have even been carefully calculated: two yellow containers are not just for decoration, but are extremely useful as they can contain all the tables and chairs neatly in one transportation. The number of containers is two 20-foot containers and three 40-foot containers, which are also suitable for relocation economical and time-saving. Even when processing containers, the cut pieces will be used for decorative wall panels, the lid of the barrel as a table and the rest can become planters.
THE GAME OF RECONSTRUCTED ARCHITECTURE
Arrange blocks based on 5 containers in 2 sizes of 20 feet and 40 feet to create many options. Each plan has a different organization that determines the opening and closing of the space.
The container block above acts as the main gate, the block below helps shape the layers of front and back yard space to create welcome and surprise.
CONTAINER RECYCLING
A 40-foot container used as a mixing counter and kitchen
Two 40-foot containers used as a warehouse and technical room, can hold all tables, chairs, scaffolding, barrels and pallets when needed for transportation.
A 20-foot container is a toilet
and a 20-foot container can be opened on three sides and become a gaming room.
IDEAS OF SELECTED OPTIONS
Maintain the current position of the banyan tree.
3 containers create welcome and depth to the space. Delineate the public space and service path.
Combining 2 40-foot containers creates a large span, both shaping the front and back space and creating a strong highlight for the main facade.
Finally, there are recycled components such as a 15m high stair tower made from 60 old scaffolding systems, fences made from wooden pallets and plant pots made from barrels, ...
THE BEAUTY OF CONTAINERS
To exploit the beauty behind the sinew and roughness of container blocks. We have solved two problems in block and color matching.
Combine the 2 yellow containers above in a strong and generous way to create a large span, diagonally placing the container blocks below to create attraction and clearly delineate the space: front, center and back. That clarity makes users feel the order of the space even though the colors and materials are diverse and blend together seemingly without any rules.
This order creates the foundation for us to boldly use strong colors: red, yellow, blue taken from the original colors of the container blocks. With such use of color, the space becomes joyful and energetic, just like how we call this beer club: POP UP
In progress
After completing the project, we see a different perspective on environmentally friendly architecture, in the way we treat the place we live.
Regenerating waste products of the logistics and construction industry such as containers, pallets, old scaffolding, barrels... into more useful things through a creative perspective,
not only brings value to the clients and the community but also reduces the burden of waste that is increasingly weighing on our own ecosystem.
